Shifting demographics amid a growing population have given rise to a more culturally diverse client base. Health care professionals have struggled to adapt in this changing environment. In schools, clinicians are likely to encounter children of gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered parents or GLBT students. Cultural and societal changes created growth in indentifiable populations. We have experienced an increased willingness of clients to disclose sexual orientation. Cultural competence is a matter of ethical service delivery.

The purpose of this study was to describe the larynx of male-to-female transsexual (MFT) women during rest breathing and phonation. Nine MFT participants with self-identified "passing" feminine voices underwent nasoendoscopy/stroboscopy while performing a variety of vocal tasks, including sustained vowels, pitch glides, and a short reading passage. Analysis of these recordings will focus on signs of vocal abuse and adjustments made to affect a feminine-sounding voice.

Some individuals' sexual orientation can be identified through the analysis of speech samples; however, the mechanism by which listeners can determine sexual orientation has yet to be discovered. This study obtained three types of speech samples from lesbian, bisexual, and straight females. Listeners rated speakers on a continuum ranging from straight to lesbian. Analysis showed that speakers' orientations were not reliably identified. Participants' self-ratings of "outness" correlated strongly with listeners' identification of sexual orientation.

The purpose of this study is examining how voice therapy alters acoustic and perceptual vocal characteristics in transsexual patients. Subjects' perturbation, fundamental frequency, vowel formants, and frequency ranges were collected before and after therapy to determine acoustic and perceptual changes occuring to alter the perception of gender. Results include a comparison of acoustic/perceptual measures at two points of intervention and therapy strategies utilized. Implications of voice therapy in transsexual patients will be discussed.
